Handles The standard handles for the Professional Line and Flannel Line timpani sticks are1/2′ diameter straight-grained white ash, 15″ in length. Standard handles for the Symphonic Line sticks are 15” tapered carbon fiber. The standard for the Euro Line sticks is a c. ½” x 15” bamboo handle. However, you can order wood sticks at longer or shorter lengths between 14 1/2 “and 16″ at no additional cost. Bamboo handles are available only between 14 ½” and 15” lengths. The tapered carbon fiber handles are recommended only at the 15” length. Straight carbon fiber handles can be customized to length between 14 ½” and 16”; however, 15” is still the recommended length. When ordering, please specify the overall length of the finished stick that is desired. If the length is not specified, the sticks will be made at 15” in length. I personally select and match all handles for weight, appearance, balance, and “feel.”
Hollow Wooden Handles Most sticks in any of the timpani stick lines also can be made on 5/8″ diameter hollow wood handles in your choice of length for an additional charge (see Prices). The hollowing is accomplished by a process that I developed, and the hollowing goes throughout the entire length of the handle except for the last inch or so where the handle is solid so as to permit firm attachment of the core. Hollow wood handles are also customizable at lengths between 14″ and 16″ at no additional charge. Please email me if you are interested in this option.
Bamboo Handles All of the Professional, Symphonic, and Flannel Lines of timpani sticks are also available on bamboo handles (see Prices). Bamboo handles are standard on the Euro Line of sticks. The hand-selected bamboo is of excellent quality, ca.7/16″ to 1/2″ in diameter, straight, and with one node at mid-length. The butt ends of the sticks are plugged to help reduce splitting, and the ends are rounded over to avoid snagging on clothing. They are customizable in length between 14 ½” and 15” at no additional cost. PLEASE NOTE: Bamboo is a grass, not a wood, and bamboo handles cannot be guaranteed against eventual splitting, although many do last for years. Due to the select nature of this bamboo, quantities are often limited.
Handle Finishes The standard finish on wood and bamboo handles is clear, high gloss polyurethane. Multiple coats (from 3 to 5 depending on porosity of the handle) are applied by hand and buffed between coats. Wood handles also can be stained with either a WALNUT or CHERRY stain prior to the application of the final polyurethane finish at an additional cost (see Prices tab).
Rubber Grips Molded black rubber grips are available on all sticks. They are most often used on the Euro Line sticks but are also an option on the other timpani stick lines (see Prices tab).
Cores All of my timpani sticks have cores that have been tested over a period of many years to achieve the best sound; however, I can provide your new sticks with variously shaped wood, cork, hard felt, tape, rubber, or composite cores made from other materials to suit your preference. Please email me to discuss what you have in mind.
Stick Recovering, Refinishing, and Core Replacement I can replace the cores, and/or the inner/outer felts on timpani, bass drum, and tam-tam sticks by all makers. Price depends on such variables as stick type, complexity of sewing, core selection (when desired), and extent of refinishing required. Please email me to discuss what you need, and I will calculate a price for you.
Anything Else? I like to think that one thing that sets me apart from most stick makers is my willingness to work with my customers to create unique timpani, bass drum, and tam-tam sticks to satisfy their requirements. If you are thinking of something in that vein but have not been able to locate it, I invite you to email me to discuss what you are looking for.
